The significance of Android

The Android G1 is out, but the reviews (Mossberg, Engadget) are mixed, especially when people comparing it against the iPhone.

But Android is much bigger than the G1, just like Linux is much bigger than the Wal-Mart $200 Linux PC. Since Android is free and pretty well made, it allows phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola or even the “black handset” manufacturers to compete in the smartphone market. It also allows people to adopt it into interesting circumstances. This is something that iPhone will never be able/willing to do.
