Visualize your business model

In the following presentation (videoslidesAlex Osterwalder shows a very nice way to describe your business model, and he supports it with many examples. You can break down your business into:

  • What (do you offer)?
  • Who? Customer segments. Customer relationships. Distribution channels.
  • How? Key resources. Key activities. Partner networks.

The significance of Android

The Android G1 is out, but the reviews (Mossberg, Engadget) are mixed, especially when people comparing it against the iPhone.

But Android is much bigger than the G1, just like Linux is much bigger than the Wal-Mart $200 Linux PC. Since Android is free and pretty well made, it allows phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola or even the “black handset” manufacturers to compete in the smartphone market. It also allows people to adopt it into interesting circumstances. This is something that iPhone will never be able/willing to do.

Guy Kawasaki 5+1 tips on VC

An informative and entertaining presentation from Guy Kawasaki. The tips are:

  1. Viable businesses != fundable businesses. There are many viable businesses (such as Windows Vista consulting), but only a few fundable businesses (you need to make a revenue of 100M in 5 years).
  2. If VC is like a dating game, then it is more like Hot or Not instead of eHarmony.
  3. Clean deal. No legal complications.
  4. Present your idea in a 10 page PowerPoint.
  5. You need to approach a lot of VCs.
  6. Ignore all the rules above if your business is already on fire and you just need money to scale: buying more servers, hiring more sales people, etc.
And here is the content of your 10 page PowerPoint:
  1. Title with your contacts
  2. Problem
  3. Solution
  4. Business model
  5. Underlying magic (such as your unique technology or business position)
  6. Marketing and sales
  7. Competitor analysis
  8. Team
  9. Projection
  10. Where are you right now

The phone of the future is not iPhone

iPod touch is now equppied with a microphone. Is iPhone just a prelude to something much more important? If Apple pulls the right strings and does VOIP right, it can creatively destroy the whole telecom industry.

Why this blog?

When we see a beautiful sunset and tell our friends or even strangers about it, we gain or lose nothing. We do that simply because of our human nature (and surprisingly a good one in this case). That’s what we want to do in this blog. We have experienced quite a lot of things in our startup and everyday lives, and once in a while, some of the things are so cool that we can’t help but sharing with you.
